During Your Hospital Stay

ATM Machines

An ATM machine is accessible inside the hospital 24 hours a day. It is located in the back of the Cafeteria dining area. Take the "A" elevators to the third floor, turn right and follow the signs to the Cafeteria. A second ATM machine can be found in the hospital Gift Shop.

Gift Shop

The Gift Shop is located in the Main Entrance of the hospital. You will find a variety of gift items, fresh flowers, cards, magazines, postage stamps, over the counter medications, snacks, candy and soft drinks. The Baby & You Lactation Center is housed in the Gift Shop and includes breast pumps for sale or rent.

The Gift Shop is open Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Daily editions of the San Antonio Express-News can be purchased in the hospital Cafeteria or Gift Shop.

Catholic Services Sunday at 3:30 p.m.
Protestant Services Sunday at 4:30 p.m.

Currently, all denominations do not offer services. However, we will do everything we can to locate a representative of your denomination. Volunteer chaplains are available 24 hours a day upon request. If you would like to see a chaplain, please ask your nurse to assist you.

Patient Meals

Patient meals are served at the following times:

    Breakfast 7 a.m. to 8:30 a.m.
    Light Breakfast 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.
    Lunch 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
    Light Lunch 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.
    Dinner 4 p.m. to midnight

Hospital units keep a variety of items for between-meal or evening snacks. If you have questions about what foods you are allowed to eat or how your foods are served, please ask your nurse.

Prescription Aids and/or Medical Equipment

If you bring eyeglasses, contact lenses, dentures, prostheses or any medical equipment, please notify your nurse.

Receiving Mail, Flowers and Gifts

It is a good idea to first check with your nurse to make sure you can receive flowers and/or gifts. If you know that friends and family will send items to you, please make sure they give the florist or vendor your full name, room number and phone number to make sure the item is delivered directly to you. University Hospital volunteers deliver mail and flowers each day.

Security (Protective Services)

Hospital security and police personnel are on duty 24 hours a day, seven days a week for your protection. If you should have any problems during your stay that require security or police assistance, immediately call (210) 358-2465.

Each employee of the University Health System is required to wear a name badge at all times to identify themselves. If you have a question about an individual's employment, you are encouraged to ask to see his or her name badge or call for assistance.

Telephones

Telephones are in all general patient care rooms at University Hospital.

  • To make a local call, dial "9," then the seven-digit telephone number.
  • To place a long-distance call, dial "0" for an Operator.
  • To call another individual within the hospital, dial "8" and the last four digits of the person's number.

To ensure a patient has plenty of rest, incoming calls are not allowed to a patient's room between the hours of 9 p.m. and 7 a.m. All incoming calls to patient rooms during these hours are routed to the hospital operator.

Visiting Hours and Waiting Areas

Please check with your nurse about the visiting hours and authorized waiting areas for your floor so you can let your guests know.
