25 years of small beginnings & big dreams
Hospital's Teeniest, Tiniest Babies Return for 25th Reunion
BACKGROUND: Miracles happen every day at University Hospital, just ask some of the mothers who've delivered premature babies here over the past 25 years. The fears and stress facing parents of extremely tiny newborns can be intense, that's why the PREMIEre Program was established in 1981. This program has helped hundreds of miracle babies and their families go from small beginnings to realizing great expectations. Many of these miracle babies will return on Thursday, October 26, 2006, to reunite with the doctors and nurses who held their tiny hands and provided expert care during the first years of their lives. It's hard for these dedicated staff members to believe the oldest "preemie" expected to attend the reunion is now 25-years old.
The PREMIEre program, sponsored by the UT Health Science Center (UTHSC-SA) and University Health System (UHS), monitors the development of premature infants (birth weight under 3 pounds) from birth through age 3, when the child officially "graduates" from the program. Routine follow-ups provide support for parents and enable the vast majority of "premies" to grow up to be normal, healthy children and adults.
