University Health System puts the "lid" on the past 50 years
Staff to celebrate 51st birthday by sealing a time capsule until the year 2055
(SAN ANTONIO - June 29, 2006)
What will you be doing 50 years from today? On June 29, 2055 doctors, nurses and other staff members (many of whom are yet to be born) will hopefully be opening a time capsule in celebration of the 100th anniversary of University Health System.
Today’s employees will gather Friday afternoon to conclude the year-long 50th anniversary celebration “A Half Century of Health, Healing and Hope” and seal a time capsule filled with all kinds of memorable items related to health care and honoring many individuals who have dedicated their lives to serve the Bexar County community since 1955.
1955 was the year the tax payers of Bexar County established one of the first county hospital districts in Texas. They voted overwhelmingly in favor of paying a property tax to ensure health care was available to all residents, regardless of their ability to pay. It was a bold move that has paid off in huge dividends for the community. University Health System today is one of the nation’s premier academic medical centers and the lead trauma center for all of South Texas. Many thousands of lives are saved every year because of the skills and advanced technologies available because of this community’s support to excellence in medical and surgical care, and the University Health System’s partnership with the UT Health Science Center at San Antonio.
