Hope for the world begins with one baby born at University Hospital
Local Cuban Cultural Center set to honor Cuba's Father of Independence
January 28 will be quite a "birthday" for one newborn at University Hospital, as the Cuban Cultural Center of San Antonio continues its annual tradition of honoring a baby born on the birthday of Cuban leader José Marti. The event is part of a program called "Hope for the World."
José Marti, born on January 28, 1853, is known as the Father of Cuba's independence from Spain. Before the communist takeover of Cuba, it was customary to recognize his birthday with "Canastillas Martianas." These complete layettes were presented across Cuba to babies who share Marti's birthday. Centuries later, the Cuban tradition is recognized in a big way at University Hospital.
The child born on Marti's birthday that is determined to be most needy will receive the Canastilla Martiana. The gift basket includes a crib, play pen, car seat, toys and clothing. All other babies born at University Hospital on the 28th will also receive small gifts.
Each year, the Center provides gifts regardless of race, religion, ethnicity or gender. The group not only recognizes Marti, but is thankful to the City of San Antonio for its warm welcome to Cuban residents.
